Before joining Tortorici & Partners, Alfonso started his career in the agribusiness, working as a financial consultant for new ventures. This opened him an opportunity to develop in a brokerage firm at the Colombian´s stock exchange market (presently BMC) where he learned, not only the value of trading commodities itself, but the importance of hedging and other financial instruments that uses these same traded commodities as the underlying assets. He later became a contractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where he worked in project management and financial evaluation for the agricultural sector. Most of his career is in the oil & gas industry. Started a position at Ecopetrol (national oil company) measuring the financial performance and economic value added (EVA) for each of the company’s core business assets. Then he worked as a senior controller in joint ventures upstream assets, and project and business evaluator. Later, as adviser of the Production & Exploration VP, headed all financial and accountability issues, also led de financial planning and budget for these business units focused on meeting profit requirements at low oil price conditions, which allowed the continuity of most assets operations. At the Merge and Acquisitions office, he developed as a lead professional in valuation, structuring and identification of business opportunities, and was a key member of the team in charge of the quality assurance revision of business opportunities structuring and valuation within the company. While working at oil and gas, in 2007, he decided to assume in parallel the challenge of taking academic roles at Javeriana University, one of the most prestigious universities in Colombia, where he taught various undergraduate finance courses, was lecturer at Project Management diploma course and graduate degree work jury at both Industrial Engineering and Business Administration schools.
Alfonso is an industrial engineer from the Javeriana University. He also has a graduate finance degree and MBA from Andes University. Obtained an international certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
Alfonso loves motorbiking, enjoys riding while adding thousands of kilometers at travel expeditions. He is also a rugby enthusiast, he used to play at a national rugby league team for several years in Colombia. He loves traveling and is passionate about all business entrepreneur issues.
