Henry has started his career as a sales & marketing consultant for a private security firm based in South Africa which specialized in mining sites and remote locations security. He then grew into the company and handled all new business development tasks in Africa (DRC, Cameroun, Mauritania, Nigeria, Djibouti, Sudan, etc.) with global companies such as Freeport Mc Moran, Alstom, Demimpex, etc. Henry’s sound knowledge of the African continent in general and mining regions in particular, attracted the interest of Manuchar N.V which offered him to head the mining chemicals supply business units in Central and Southern Africa as a commercial manager. Henry had just been introduced to a brand new industry (logistics and trading) and quickly developed into an astute trader; distributing industrial chemicals, bulk materials (polymers, bitumen, cement, etc.) and other consumables throughout the continent mining hubs (Copperbelt, East and West Africa gold mines, Namibia uranium mines and the Platinum Reef). After 3 years at Manuchar, he decided to pursue his own avenue as a consultant to companies willing to develop or increase their market share in emerging markets. First, with the US communications and infrastructure products company Duraline in spear-heading their market positioning in sub-Sahara following the acquisition of the South African optic fiber ducts and conduits manufacturer Nextube; then with the Swiss based Eferton Group to boost their soft commodities and chemicals trading branch in Dubai. Henry’s personal and professional journey has given him intimate insights into African dynamics and particularities versus the rest of the world; not only in the business environment, but also at the social level. He aims to use this knowledge to guide and advise individuals and companies willing to expand or venture into new territories. Henry has since founded Goelan Consulting Pty Ltd which is a hub of independent professionals who take on different projects ranging from engineering, advisory services to procurement in Africa, Middle-East and Asia.
Henry initially studied Civil engineering at University of Johannesburg in South Africa. He holds numerous certificates in project management, international trade and logistics as well as intermediate Mandarin and Portuguese from Wits University in South Africa. Henry is fluent in French, English and Portuguese.
Henry is an avid traveler as well as a passionate fan of football, basketball and judo. Three disciplines that he practices and teaches as often as possible. He also enjoys cooking, photography and collects indigenous art.
